England cricket have embarked on a new era for white-ball cricket, marking a significant shift in their squad for the upcoming clashes against Australia.
According to details, veteran players Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali have been dropped from the squad as part of a broader revamp following underwhelming performances in recent ODI and T20 World Cup campaigns.
The changes come after the dismissal of Matthew Mott as head coach of limited overs cricket last month. Marcus Trescothick, appointed as interim coach, has announced a fresh squad featuring five uncapped players. Left-arm seamer Josh Hull, all-rounder Jacob Bethell, and pace bowler John Turner have been included in both formats, while Dan Mousley and Jordan Cox have been added to the T20 squad.
Moeen Ali, who was a key vice-captain to Jos Buttler, is now 37 and has recognized that his international career is nearing its end. His role as a spin-bowling all-rounder will be filled by Bethell and Mousley. Bairstow, who turns 35 next month, was a crucial part of England's 2019 World Cup victory but has now lost his spot despite having 14 months remaining on his central contract.
Chris Jordan has also been excluded from the squad, while Liam Livingstone retains his place in the T20 squad but is absent from the ODI group. Durham seamer Brydon Carse returns to the squad after serving a three-month ban for historical betting offences.
Jofra Archer, who has only played in The Hundred since the T20 World Cup, remains in both squads. The three-match T20 series against Australia will start at the Ageas Bowl, Southampton, shortly after the conclusion of England's third and final Test against Sri Lanka.
The ODI squad includes Harry Brook, Gus Atkinson, Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith, and Matthew Potts, who will join Trescothick’s team following a short break. Joe Root is absent from the squad as part of workload management, with Zak Crawley, Ben Stokes, and Mark Wood sidelined due to injuries. Fast bowler Saqib Mahmood makes his return after recovering from fitness issues.
