The closure of the microblogging website 'X' in Pakistan has elicited a response from the US State Department also, emphasizing the importance of internet freedom and access to social media platforms for communication.
In a statement, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller underscored the United States' commitment to promoting freedom of expression online, both domestically and internationally. Miller emphasized the need for easy access to social media platforms, asserting that such access facilitates open dialogue and communication among people.
To a journalist's question about Washington's stance on X, formerly known as Twitter, being disrupted in Pakistan in recent days and the Capitol Hill calling on the State Department to raise the issue, Miller said: "...we always want to see full internet freedom around the world, and that includes the availability of platforms that people use to communicate with each other".
He further said that the US wanted internet platforms to be available to people in Pakistan and around the world.
The closure of 'X' in Pakistan has raised concerns about the limitations placed on internet freedom within the country. Access to social media platforms plays a crucial role in enabling individuals to connect, share information, and engage in discussions on various topics.
