As anticipation builds for the forthcoming Eid al-Fitr celebrations in the United Arab Emirates, residents are eagerly eyeing what could potentially be a substantial six-day holiday.
While the official confirmation of dates awaits closer scrutiny via Moon-sightings, the UAE government has already shared tentative plans for the 2024 Eid al-Fitr holiday period.
Traditionally, Eid al-Fitr holidays span from Ramadan 29 to Shawwal 3 in the Islamic calendar. Should April 10 mark the commencement of Eid in 2024, corresponding to Tuesday April 9 as Ramadan 29 and Friday April 12 as Shawwal 3 in the Gregorian calendar, residents could enjoy an extended break from Tuesday April 9 to Friday April 12, with the inclusion of the weekend providing a total of six days off.
For those seeking to maximise their holiday experience, strategic planning could yield an impressive nine-day respite by booking Monday April 8 off work.
Astronomical projections
Astronomical projections suggested that Ramadan may commence on Monday March 11, 2024, with Eid al-Fitr likely beginning on Wednesday April 10 of the same year.
According to reports from Arab media outlets, Ramadan's duration is anticipated to be 30 days in the UAE, leading to a six-day holiday for employees across public and private sectors.
The potential holiday period could end on April 13, a Saturday, with the subsequent day being Sunday, thus affording employees a contiguous six-day break.
Furthermore, preparations for the sighting of the Ramadan moon in the UAE are expected to commence on March 10. Should the moon be sighted on that day, the first fast would be observed on March 11, consequently initiating Ramadan on March 12.
As excitement mounts for the upcoming festivities, residents are also gearing up for the fasting period, with Ramadan's duration in Dubai estimated to span approximately 13 hours and 45 minutes initially, gradually extending to roughly 14 hours and 25 minutes by its conclusion.
