The Punjab Assembly is gearing up for a significant event as the election of the speaker and deputy speaker is set to take place tomorrow (Saturday). Ahead of this crucial session, political parties have announced their nominations for the coveted positions.
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has put forward Malik Ahmad Khan and Zaheer Iqbal Channar as its nominees for the roles of speaker and deputy speaker, respectively. This decision reflects the party's strategy to assert its influence in the assembly proceedings.

Meanwhile, the Sunni Ittehad Council, which was recently joined by PTI-backed independent winners, has also named its candidates for the positions, nominating Malik Ahmad Khan Bhachar for the role of speaker and Moin Riaz Qureshi for the position of deputy speaker. This move signifies the council's intention to actively participate in the legislative process and advocate for its interests within the Punjab Assembly.
As preparations for the election unfold, anticipation mounts among lawmakers and observers alike. The outcome of the election will not only determine the leadership of the assembly but also set the tone for the legislative agenda moving forward.
Earlier in the day, 313 members of the Punjab Assembly took oath in a session that started over two hours late. After the oath, the assembly secretary announced that polling through secret ballot for the slots of speaker and deputy speaker would be held on Saturday.
The speaker then adjourned the session till 4pm on Saturday.
