Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) senior leader Yousuf Raza Gilani on Saturday urged the need for promoting interfaith harmony in the country.
Expressing his thoughts in Islamabad, the former prime minister said: “There is a dire need to work for the rights of the minorities.”
He recounted the contributions made by his party for the sake of the uplift of the minorities, saying, “We [PPP] had elected the Christian member as the Sindh deputy speaker.”
Remembering former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, Gilani said: “It was Benazir Bhutto, who gave the representation to the minorities on the general seats in the Senate.”
Meanwhile, Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad said: “We will not take rest unless the culprits of Jaranwala incident are brought to justice.”
– Bilawal Bhutto vows to serve country along PML-N –
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Friday vowed to serve the country along with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
Speaking exclusively to Samaa TV, the former foreign minister said: “Our number games have been completed.”
– Dual constitution –
Few days back, Bhutto-Zardari raised concerns over President Arif Alvi's role and asserted he would face dual legal proceedings over "breaching constitutional mandates."
Speaking to media persons outside the Supreme Court of Pakistan, Bilawal said one case pertains to the President's controversial decision to dissolve the assembly amid a no-confidence motion, while the other concerns his failure to convene the National Assembly session as prescribed by the constitution.
"President Arif Alvi's actions constitute a flagrant disregard for constitutional obligations," asserted Bilawal Bhutto. "If the President neglects his duties, it falls upon the Speaker to uphold constitutional integrity. The presidency transcends the individual occupying it."
Stessing adherence to constitutional processes, Bilawal Bhutto dismissed the notion of impeachment, suggesting that a new president should be elected through the established electoral procedure.
"The constitution mandates a National Assembly session on February 29 under any circumstance," he reiterated.
