Former Australian Test wicket Mattew Wade decided to bid farewell to the red-ball while remaining committed to cricket's shorter formats.
In a late announcement made on Friday, the 36-year-old revealed his decision ahead of the upcoming Sheffield Shield final. This final will mark his 166th and final first-class appearance as Tasmania faces Western Australia.
Wade clarified that his decision wasn't influenced by any decline in his performance or lack of contribution. Instead, he acknowledged the emergence of younger talents who have essentially nudged him towards this decision.
"I'm not stepping back due to a decline in performance or feeling inadequate," he stated. "It's more about the emergence of younger players who have earned their place."
Having represented Australia in 36 Tests both as a wicketkeeper and a specialist batter from 2012 to 2021, Wade will remain active in one-day and Twenty20 cricket.
Explaining his choice, he mentioned, "By focusing on shorter formats, I aim to enhance my physical strength, spend more time in the gym, and ensure a longer career in that arena."
Wade's commitment to the game is evident, as he postponed his participation in the Indian Premier League to compete in the upcoming Shield final.
