Former President Donald Trump has stirred up controversy with his recent announcement promoting a patriotic edition of the Christian Bible, themed around Lee Greenwood’s iconic song, “God Bless the USA.”
Trump took to social media during Holy Week to encourage followers to purchase the Bible, a move that has sparked debate within religious circles.
Priced at $59.99, the Bible features an American flag on the cover alongside the words “God Bless the USA.”
Inside, it includes the lyrics to Greenwood’s song, as well as excerpts from The Declaration of Independence and the Pledge of Allegiance. However, Trump's endorsement of the text has drawn criticism, with some calling it sacrilege and questioning the former president's motives, particularly given his ongoing legal battles.
Critics have pointed out the ethical implications of using sacred scriptures for financial gain, labeling the endorsement as "heresy" and "borderline offensive." Rev.
Benjamin Cremer condemned the move as an attempt to co-opt faith for personal power, while Pastor Jason Cornwall cited biblical teachings against taking God's name in vain.
Beyond the religious debate, historians and scholars have raised concerns about the project's alignment with Christian nationalism—a movement historically linked to prejudice, nativism, and white supremacy.
Jemar Tisby, an author and historian, highlighted the selective inclusion of content in the Bible, suggesting it reflects the values of Christian nationalism rather than genuine religious reverence.
