The United States State Department has released its bi-annual report, highlighting a concerning surge in terrorism incidents and human rights violations in Pakistan throughout 2023.
According to the report, attacks targeting army personnel, civilians, and police have been on the rise, resulting in a significant loss of life and widespread fear among the population.
It further stated that cross-border attacks have been particularly devastating, with hundreds of lives lost as a result of terrorist activities. Despite Pakistan's efforts to combat terrorism and address security challenges, the report notes that the country continues to face significant threats from extremist elements and miscreants.
Furthermore, the report notes that there has been alarming evidence of extrajudicial killings and violence against political activists and their families. "No arrangements have been made for the improvement of human rights in Pakistan,” the US report states.
Numerous cases were filed against several individuals, including a former prime minister, after the incidents of May 9, according to the report, adding that human rights organizations have expressed concerns about the terrorist incidents of May 9.
The report also notes hardships faced by ordinary political activists in prisons, while lawlessness increased due to political and religious intolerance in the country.
In addition to these concerns, the report highlights restrictions on media freedom in Pakistan, with journalists facing arrests and disappearances. Furthermore, no substantial action has been taken against officials implicated in human rights violations, further exacerbating the climate of impunity.
