Pakistan is poised to launch its second communication satellite, Paksat MM1, into space today. The launch, which will take place from China's Xichang Satellite Launch Centre, marks a significant advancement in Pakistan's space and communication capabilities.
According to a spokesperson from the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco), the five-tonne satellite is outfitted with the latest communication technology, promising to revolutionize internet connectivity across Pakistan and provide the fastest internet facility throughout the country.
The satellite is set to be positioned in a geostationary orbit 36,000 kilometres above Earth, a process that will take approximately three to four days, the spokesperson said. He added that the satellite will play an important role in the promotion of economic activities besides e-commerce, and e-governance.

Suparco Director Atiqur Rehman emphasized the transformative potential of Paksat MM1. "This satellite will play a crucial role in improving high-speed internet services, and ensure connectivity even in remote areas such as Balochistan and Gilgit-Baltistan," he stated. "The launch of Paksat MM1 will be a significant milestone in Pakistan's communication infrastructure, enhancing e-commerce, e-governance, and overall economic activities."
The introduction of Paksat MM1 follows Pakistan's recent achievement of sending a satellite to the moon, underscoring the nation's growing expertise in space technology. The satellite's deployment is expected to facilitate the provision of the fastest internet services across various regions of the country, addressing the digital divide and fostering greater connectivity.
This advanced satellite, developed by Pakistani scientists and engineers through relentless effort, marks a major step forward in the nation’s aspirations to enhance internet connectivity across all regions. Paksat MM1 will help improve TV broadcasting, cellular phone service, and broadband service across Pakistan. It will start providing its service in August.
