The National Assembly on Sunday passed a resolution condemning the recent mob lynching incident in Swat, demanding immediate action against those involved.
The resolution, which was presented by Federal Law Minister Nazir Tarar, was approved by a majority vote.
The resolution emphasised the need for both federal and provincial governments to ensure the protection of minorities. "Action must be taken against the perpetrators of such heinous acts," the resolution stated.
Addressing the Assembly, Federal Law Minister Nazir Tarar expressed the shared outrage among members over the incident. "Although we may have our differences, we must unite on certain fundamental issues. Any incident akin to the one in Swat, regardless of where it occurs in the country, should prompt immediate and decisive action by the respective governments," Tarar asserted.
He further elaborated that the protection of citizens and the establishment of the state's writ are paramount. "In Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Balochistan, and Sindh, it is imperative that the respective governments uphold the rule of law and protect the people," he said.
The opposition echoed these sentiments, underscoring the importance of safeguarding minority rights. "The defense of our minority brothers' rights is a matter of national integrity," an opposition member stated during the session.
Law Minister Tarar also addressed the political climate, urging a reconsideration of conduct among his colleagues. "Discussing certain issues does not harm our politics; rather, it strengthens our democracy," he noted.
Reflecting on the political challenges faced over the years, Tarar remarked, "I have spent countless days in court for political prisoners. Today, we witness a judiciary that is providing relief, a judiciary for which we should be grateful."
The discussion also touched upon the broader security context, with Defense Minister Azam Nazir Tarar referencing operation "Azm-e-Istehkam". He clarified that the Apex Committee, established during the Tehreek-e-Insaaf government, held a meeting without any objections raised by the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa regarding the operation. "This is a matter of Pakistan's defense and security," he stressed.
The terms and conditions of peration "Azm-e-Istehkam" are set to be presented to the federal cabinet and the National Assembly. An in-camera meeting of the National Security Committee, with the Prime Minister in attendance, will also be convened to further discuss the matter.
