Indian Occupied Kashmir observed a complete shutdown on the eighth death anniversary of Burhan Wani, a prominent leader killed on July 8, 2016.
Wani, born on September 19, 1994, in Dadasar village of Pulwama, joined Hizbul Mujahideen at the age of 16. His decision to join the militant group came after alleged harassment by Indian security forces.
Known for his effective use of social media, Wani gained significant popularity among Kashmiri youth. In August 2015, the Indian government placed a bounty of 1 million rupees on him.
Indian forces killed Wani in Kokernag on July 8, 2016. His funeral was attended by over 200,000 people. His death sparked widespread protests in Kashmir, leading to a 53-day curfew and the death of more than 100 Kashmiri youths in violent demonstrations.
Wani's impact on Kashmir's separatist movement continues to be felt years after his death, with many young Kashmiris viewing him as a symbol of resistance.
