In India, recent incidents of violence related to cow protection have raised concerns among the Muslim community, particularly in the Mewat region bordering Haryana and Rajasthan. Several Muslims have reportedly been attacked or killed by so-called "gau rakshaks" or cow vigilantes, often under suspicion of cow slaughter or transportation.
In Basaro village of Mewat, multiple Muslims have reportedly died in attacks by cow vigilantes. As a result, some Muslim families have abandoned dairy farming for other occupations. Muhammad Ali, 27, and his brothers have switched from dairy farming to driving.
Incidents of violence have also been reported during Eid al-Adha, when Muslims traditionally sacrifice animals. In February 2023, two Muslim men, Nasir (25) and Junaid (35), were allegedly abducted and killed in Rajasthan. A similar incident occurred in January 2023 involving three Muslim youths.
The issue of cow-related violence appears more prevalent in states governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Human rights organizations have been called upon to take practical steps to protect the religious beliefs of minorities, especially Muslims, in India.
