Oxford University has been engulfed in strong agitation against the founding chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Imran Khan, contesting the chancellorship election. The renowned British newspaper Daily Mail has labeled the former prime minister as a ‘disgrace’ in a headline of the article.
According to the Daily Mail, Oxford University received e-mails and petitions filled with grief and anger regarding Imran Khan's candidacy for chancellor. These communications describe the PTI founder as the most unsuitable candidate for the chancellorship of Oxford University.
Petitions submitted to the University of Oxford argue that it is unacceptable for a person convicted in corruption cases to contest the election for the chancellorship of a prestigious educational institution like Oxford University.
Additionally, Imran Khan's extreme stance, marked by enthusiastic support for the Taliban and Osama bin Laden, has become a major obstacle to his candidacy. Critics point out that Khan has declared Osama bin Laden a martyr in his address to the National Assembly.
The petitions also highlight various personal and public interest conflicts, including Khan’s controversial remarks on women’s attire. In the past, Khan had suggested that women's short dresses were a primary cause of incidents of harassment, a statement that has further damaged his reputation.
Daily Mail reported that Imran Khan's supporters are reportedly harassing his opponents and using social media to suppress criticism of his candidacy.
According to the British newspaper, Oxford University has a storied history of upholding respect for humanity, moral values, and high standards of leadership. Allowing Imran Khan to contest the chancellorship could tarnish this reputation.
It is important to note that candidates for the chancellorship election will be shortlisted by Oxford University in early October.
