The Intergovernmental Institution for the Use of Micro-algae Spirulina Against Malnutrition (IIMSAM), a recognized observer to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), has appointed UAE-based Pakistani businessman Umer Farooq Zahoor as a Goodwill Ambassador.
This role is aimed at advancing the UN’s Millennium Development Goals through the promotion of Spirulina, a micro-alga known for its nutritional benefits.
In an official communication from IIMSAM, Remigio Maradona, the Permanent Secretary General, confirmed Zahoor’s appointment as Pro Bono Ambassador at Large. This position, located within the Secretary General’s office, is instrumental in supporting IIMSAM’s mission to address global malnutrition through the free distribution of Spirulina, with a particular focus on underserved regions, including Pakistan.
The appointment aligns with IIMSAM’s broader objective to facilitate the global distribution of Spirulina in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2020-2030. The organization, granted independent observer status by ECOSOC Resolution 2003, has been pivotal in the fight against malnutrition.
Zahoor’s new role includes managing the global distribution of Spirulina, a highly nutritious micro-alga, to disadvantaged areas. His work will directly support IIMSAM’s efforts in combating nutritional deficiencies on an international scale.
Recently, Zahoor was recognized for his significant contributions to international development. Last month, he was awarded the Hilal-e-Imtiaz by President Asif Ali Zardari for facilitating over $400 million in foreign investment into Pakistan. These investments, focused on infrastructure, ports, and logistics, have also paved the way for over $2 billion in projects across various sectors including energy, agriculture, and real estate.
Zahoor has also been honoured by the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, receiving the Medal of Honour for his efforts in securing $55 million in foreign investment for the country.
The award was presented by the President of Equatorial Guinea during a ceremony attended by dignitaries from both local and Middle Eastern countries.
Earlier this year, Zahoor stepped down from his role as Ambassador-at-Large for the Republic of Liberia, a position he held for five years. Liberia’s government praised Zahoor for his dedication and expressed continued support for his efforts in strengthening international relations.
