Melania Trump - former First Lady of the United States - has expressed support for abortion rights, despite her husband, former President Donald Trump, maintaining a staunchly anti-abortion stance.
This disclosure comes ahead of the upcoming U.S. presidential election, where abortion remains a key issue, particularly following the Supreme Court's landmark decision overturning Roe v. Wade.
According to The Guardian, which has gained early access to Melania's forthcoming memoir, the 54-year-old former model advocates for women’s autonomy in making decisions about their pregnancies. She also supports state-level discretion in regulating abortion, a position that stands in contrast to Donald Trump's long-held opposition to abortion rights.
"It is imperative to guarantee that women have autonomy in deciding their preference of having children, based on their own convictions, free from any intervention or pressure from the government," Melania reportedly wrote.
Donald Trump, who has repeatedly boasted about his role in appointing three conservative Supreme Court justices, takes credit for the 2022 ruling that overturned the constitutional right to abortion.
This decision enabled more than 20 states, including Georgia, to implement partial or full abortion bans, with Georgia restricting most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy.
With the November 5 presidential election fast approaching, polling data indicates that Trump's Democratic rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, holds a significant lead over him on the issue of abortion. Harris has positioned herself as a strong advocate for reproductive rights, appealing to voters concerned about recent restrictions.
Melania Trump's stance adds a layer of complexity to an already contentious issue in the campaign. In her memoir, she firmly asserts, "Why should anyone other than the woman herself have the power to determine what she does with her own body? A woman’s fundamental right to liberty grants her the authority to terminate her pregnancy if she wishes."
These comments highlight the divergence between the former First Lady and the Republican Party’s hardline anti-abortion stance, which has become central to Trump's campaign.
