WhatsApp announced a significant update on Tuesday, introducing a new feature that enables users to save contacts directly within the app.
This enhancement means that even if users lose their phone or link a new device to their primary number, they will still have access to all their contacts stored in WhatsApp’s secure cloud storage.
Previously, WhatsApp relied solely on users' phone contact books to manage connections. When a new contact messaged a user, the information would only be stored locally on their device. The upcoming feature, rolling out soon, will allow users to save contacts accessible on any device, including WhatsApp for web and Windows, while still offering the option to sync these contacts to their mobile devices.
This update follows last year’s introduction of the ability to log into two WhatsApp accounts on a single device, providing users the flexibility to maintain separate personal and business contact lists.
It also caters to those who share devices with others, allowing them to keep their contact information private.
WhatsApp developed a new encrypted storage system called Identity Proof Linked Storage (IPLS) for this feature, generating an encryption key on the user's device to ensure secure contact storage. Additionally, the app is collaborating with Cloudflare to guarantee the integrity of the contact data by signing any changes made to the user’s directory.
In an exciting twist, WhatsApp is also working on enabling users to save contacts by usernames, adding an extra layer of privacy. This means users can interact without needing to share their phone numbers, similar to features offered by rivals like Signal and Telegram.
With this new feature, WhatsApp aims to enhance user privacy and convenience, reinforcing its commitment to evolving in a competitive messaging landscape.
