South African cricketer David Bedingham found himself in a unique dilemma when his team, Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC), reached the SA20 final—clashing with his planned wedding date. The Proteas batter had scheduled his wedding with fiancée Jenna van Niekerk for the same weekend but made a last-minute adjustment to ensure he could play in the championship match.
According to South African cricket journalist Firdose Moonda, Bedingham decided to postpone his wedding by a day after SEC secured a spot in their third consecutive SA20 final. His fiancée, initially hoping for an early exit to keep their wedding plans intact, later backed the team’s journey to the final.
Unfortunately for Bedingham and SEC, their hopes of a historic three-peat were shattered as MI Cape Town (MICT) dominated the final. The right-handed batter was dismissed early by Kagiso Rabada, and SEC’s batting lineup crumbled under pressure, conceding the title to MICT in a 76-run defeat.
Speaking to SuperSport before the match, the 30-year-old cricketer acknowledged the weekend’s unique circumstances. "I had to skip the pre-wedding event because of the game, so my father took my place instead. My best man and brother are flying in, and they promised my fiancée they’d make sure I board my flight in time," Bedingham joked.
In the championship match, MI Cape Town posted a challenging 181-run total, thanks to explosive performances from Ryan Rickelton and Dewald Brevis. Their star-studded bowling attack, featuring Trent Boult, Kagiso Rabada, and Rashid Khan, dismantled SEC’s batting order, securing the SA20 trophy with a commanding win.
Despite the disappointing loss, Bedingham will now shift his focus to a new chapter in life—his wedding, ensuring that while SEC fell short of the title, his special day remains on track.
