A man has been arrested by Delhi Police in Shahdara's Kailash Nagar area on allegations of sexually assaulting multiple stray dogs, officials confirmed on Sunday.
The accused, identified as Naushad, was taken into custody following a formal complaint lodged by an animal welfare NGO, where he was reportedly employed as a supplier. The NGO accused Naushad of raping at least 12 to 13 female dogs in the vicinity.
A disturbing video, which has since gone viral on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), appears to show the man being confronted and beaten by locals. In the footage, a voice can be heard asking, “How many dogs did you rape?” The same clip also shows the accused allegedly in custody, further fuelling public outrage.
The Delhi Police, in a statement, confirmed that they are in possession of the video and that further interrogation is underway. "We have taken the accused into custody, and the investigation is ongoing," said a police spokesperson.
Animal rights activists have expressed deep concern over the incident, tagging various officials and leaders including Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the Lieutenant Governor’s Office, and Delhi Police, demanding stringent action under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and other relevant laws.
This is not the first incident of its kind in the capital. Last year, a similar case was reported from Jayanagar, Bengaluru, where a man from Bihar was arrested for sexually abusing a stray dog. Animal rights groups have since called for stronger implementation of animal welfare laws and stricter monitoring of repeat offenders.
In a separate development, Delhi Police also apprehended three Bangladeshi nationals, including a woman, for illegally residing in the city. The arrests were made by a team of the special staff in Rohini district following a tip-off.
The arrested individuals were identified as Mahbub Alam, 50, from Sylhet, Bangladesh, and two others. According to officials, Alam had entered India on April 5, 2025, to attend an appointment at the Portugal Embassy in Delhi. However, his visa expired on April 8, and he remained in the country unlawfully.
The trio has been sent to a deportation centre after the completion of codal formalities. Police have initiated further action as per immigration laws.
Authorities have urged citizens to report such cases of animal cruelty or illegal immigration to helplines and concerned departments to ensure timely intervention.
