The Sindh government announced that May 1 (Thursday) will be observed as a public holiday across the province in connection with International Labour Day, commemorating the contributions and struggles of workers around the world.
According to a notification issued by the Services, General Administration and Coordination Department, all government and semi-government offices will remain closed on the day.
The holiday will also apply to all educational institutions, including schools, colleges, and universities, both public and private.
Labour Day, also known as May Day, is observed internationally to honour the working class and to highlight the importance of fair labour practices, decent working conditions, and the protection of workers’ rights.
The provincial government’s decision is in line with global observances that pay tribute to the sacrifices made by labourers in the fight for better wages, shorter working hours, and safer workplaces. It also serves as a reminder of the continuing need to ensure equitable treatment and opportunities for workers across all sectors.
Labour Day has been a public holiday in Pakistan since 1972 and is marked by rallies, seminars, and various events organised by trade unions and labour rights groups.
