The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has decided to seek the deployment of the Pakistan Army in the upcoming general elections.
According to sources, the election commission has sent a letter to the Interior Ministry seeking the deployment of army personnel for elections. The commission has sought a comprehensive report from the Interior Ministry regarding security in the upcoming general elections.
The sources said that the commission has, in the letter, sought a comprehensive report on the availability of security personnel from the four provinces as well as Islamabad by November 27. The report should also include the total number of security personnel available from the provinces and a security plan.
It has been further stated in the letter that the federation and the provinces are constitutionally obliged to support the Election Commission of Pakistan.
It is the responsibility of the law enforcement agencies to improve the law and order situation in all the constituencies.
According to election commission sources, it has been decided to deploy the Pakistan Army due to shortage of police personnel at the polling stations.
