One of the late Princess Diana's iconic evening dresses has fetched a record-breaking $1.1 million at an auction, shattering its estimated value by elevenfold.
Los Angeles-based Julien's Auctions announced the sale, marking a new high for any of Diana's gowns ever sold under the hammer.
The black and blue ballerina-length dress, designed by Jacques Azagury, was worn by Diana in Florence in 1985 and later captivated photographers during her 1986 visit to Vancouver. Originally valued at $100,000-$200,000, the dress, along with a matching illustration, skyrocketed to a final price of $1,148,080, according to Julien's Auctions.
"Julien’s now holds the new world record for most expensive dress worn by Princess Diana sold at auction,” it said in a statement, adding that the previous auction record was $604,800.
The long elegant velvet bodice, adorned with sparkling blue stars, seamlessly transitions into a two-tiered blue organza skirt, cinched with a sash and bow.
This exquisite piece was among countless Hollywood and historical memorabilia featured in Julien's and Turner Classic Movies' four-day 'Hollywood Legends' auction.
Another noteworthy gem, a pink chiffon blouse worn by Diana in her iconic 1981 engagement portrait to Prince Charles by Lord Snowdon, fetched an impressive $381,000. Originally valued at $80,000-$100,000, the blouse, designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel (creators of Diana's wedding dress), captured the attention of collectors, further solidifying Diana's enduring legacy.
