The Senate Friday passed a resolution, presented by Senator Dilawar Khan, seeking a delay in the February 8 general elections, citing security concerns.
Independent Senator Dilawar Khan said there were security threats to political leaders, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and there are concerns about the security of the political parties' candidates.
The resolution stated that intelligence agencies had issued a security alert for election rallies.
Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz Senator Afnanullah Khan opposed the resolution.
PML-N Senator Afnan Ullah Khan on Friday opposed the resolution to postpone the elections in 2024.
Senator Afnan responded to Senator Dilawar—who presented the resolution seeking a delay in general polls—that after the assassination of ex-PM Benazir Bhutto general election was held in 2008.
He said the security situation was worse at the time the election was held in 2013.
Afnan argued that if elections were delayed on such matters the country would never go through elections.

JUI’s Fazlur Rehman casts doubt over elections on Feb 8
Earlier, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman Monday stirred controversy by raising doubts on timely general elections, which are slated to be held on February 8 as per the Election Commission of Pakistan.
Addressing a presser in Dera Ismail Khan, Maulana Fazlur Rehman began by drawing attention to the controversy surrounding the rejection of nomination papers, not only of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) but also of Akhtar Mengal.
He questioned the fairness of the process, setting the tone for a critical evaluation of the election dynamics.
The JUI-F Chief then addressed a recent attack on his convoy, emphasising that he was at home during the incident. Highlighting the insecurity indicated by such events, he raised questions about the prevailing law and order situation and its impact on conducting free and fair elections.
Expressing the party's desire to participate in the electoral process, Maulana Fazlur Rehman stated, "We want to go to the election, but there should be an environment for it."
