The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) convened a meeting on Thursday to address the contentious issue of the allotment of election symbols to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
The meeting, slated to take place at the Election Commission's Secretariat, is expected to convene tomorrow morning and will be chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja.
Sources privy to the development said that the key agenda of the gathering is reported to be centered around today’s decision of the Peshawar High Court regarding the PTI's intra-party elections and their election symbol.
Meanwhile, all four members of the commission, along with special secretaries would also attend the meeting.
Sources added that the law wing of the electoral watchdog will present a comprehensive briefing to the commission members on the legal intricacies associated with the Peshawar High Court's ruling.
It is pertinent to mention that the Election Commission is yet to officially receive the detailed verdict from the Peshawar High Court regarding the PTI intra-party elections.
PHC declares ECP order ‘illegal’ over bat symbol
Earlier today, the Peshawar High court granted permission to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf to participate in upcoming elections using the 'bat' symbol.
In the short order, a copy of which is available with Dawn.com, the PHC said that the ECP order was “illegal, without any lawful authority and of no legal effect”.
The court directed the ECP to publish the certificate filed by the PTI following internal polls on its website. “It is further held and declared that the PTI is entitled to the election symbol strictly in terms of Sections 215 and 217 read with any other enabling provision of the Election Act, 2017 and Election Rules, 2017,” it said.
