Cam Davis held on to his lead as the darkness-halted first round of the PGA Sony Open resumed on Friday.
Davis had an outstanding start on Thursday, shooting a career-low eight-under-par 62 at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, Hawaii, securing a two-stroke lead in the initial round of the 2024 US PGA Tour season's first full-field event.
As play was interrupted by darkness on Thursday, American Taylor Montgomery trailed closely in second place with a score of 64. However, 24 golfers were unable to complete their first rounds until Friday morning.
After the completion of the first rounds on Friday, China's Carl Yuan, along with Americans Norman Xiong and Ben Kohles, performed impressively, each carding a 66 to share the seventh spot, four strokes behind the leader.
Yuan, in pursuit of his first PGA title, played one additional hole on Friday, sinking an eight-foot birdie putt on the par-5 ninth to climb up the leaderboard.
Kohles, who played two holes on Friday, closed his round with a six-foot birdie putt at the par-5 18th, finishing with a score of 66. Last November, Kohles achieved his best PGA finish, sharing fifth place at the RSM Classic.
Xiong, born in Guam to Chinese parents, concluded his round with three pars on Friday. Although he missed a six-foot birdie putt at the 18th, the world number 166, playing in only his 12th PGA event, showed a promising performance. His last cut on the PGA Tour was at the 2019 Memorial Tournament.
