Wanindu Hasaranga's remarkable performance in the lower order paved the way for Sri Lanka's triumphant 2-1 series win against Zimbabwe on Thursday.
The visitors were dismissed for a paltry 82 in Colombo, marking their lowest-ever T20 total. Sri Lanka's home captain showcased his prowess with figures of 4-15, claiming two crucial wickets on the final two deliveries. The Sri Lankan team achieved a convincing nine-wicket victory, wrapping up the chase in just 11 overs.
In a post-match statement, all-rounder and former skipper Angelo Mathews expressed satisfaction with the team's comeback, stating, "Today we bounced back." He credited the team's positive environment, fostered by their attacking captain's ambitious goals.
Pathum Nissanka (39 not out) and Kusal Mendis (33) played crucial roles, contributing 64 runs in 46 balls. Zimbabwe managed only one breakthrough when left-arm spinner Sean Williams dismissed Mendis. Nissanka sealed the victory for Sri Lanka with a six-over long-on off Sikandar Raza, as the scores drew level.
Although Zimbabwe had a commendable start with 56-3 in the first six overs, they struggled to score boundaries once fielding restrictions were lifted. Brian Bennett, the number three batsman, top-scored with 29 off 12 balls before falling to a catch by Hasaranga off Mathews.
Zimbabwe faced a rapid collapse, losing their last six wickets for just 11 runs, including three in the final three balls of the innings. Sri Lanka's fielding significantly improved after a lacklustre performance in the second match, where they suffered a four-wicket defeat.
Reflecting on the series, Zimbabwe captain Raza admitted, "We didn't turn up today," highlighting a lack of courage and fighting spirit. He acknowledged the series had its share of highs and lows, with Zimbabwe oscillating between being "really good or really poor."
Wanindu Hasaranga's impressive bowling figures of 4-15 were complemented by Angelo Mathews, who rediscovered his form, sharing the new ball and taking two wickets. The victory marked Sri Lanka's first T20 series win since their Asia Cup triumph in 2022.
Looking ahead, Sri Lanka is set to host Afghanistan for a one-off Test and six white-ball matches.
