In an interesting dialogue between the caretaker finance minister Shamshad Akhtar and journalists at the Custom House, Akhtar appeared to avoid facing questions from the media.
Despite the occasion being Customs Day, Akhtar mentioned the need to go to Islamabad immediately during her speech and during the interview with journalists, she only responded to three questions, stating that she had to go to Islamabad and would address further inquiries later.
Akhtar said she received two calls from the President of Pakistan and, under continuous insistence from journalists, took a few minutes to listen to their questions.
When asked about the taxation of retailers, Akhtar provided a vague response.
Shamshad Akhtar shared insights into the ongoing consultation process for reforms in the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), spanning the last five months.
The minister said that suggestions from FBR members had been considered, and the Chairman of FBR was actively involved in the reform initiatives. She expressed optimism that the FBR would surpass the target of more than Rs9.4 trillion in the current fiscal year.
Akhtar highlighted the reduction in the number of new Statutory Regulatory Orders (SRs) and acknowledged the previous high duties and emphasized the importance of customs in the development of cross-border trade.
Dr. Akhtar defined the role of Pakistan Customs as crucial in the economy, functioning as a regulator.
She expressed a preference for the One Window facility and emphasized working with a modern regulatory framework.
The Federal Finance Minister, in turn, focused on making Torkham and Chaman Border Customs significant components, highlighting excellent income opportunities at these border points.
