In a recent escalation of tensions in the Middle East, an Israeli airstrike targeted a building adjacent to the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Syrian state media reported.
The strike, which occurred in the upscale Mezzeh neighborhood of Damascus, resulted in significant damage to the building and neighboring structures. According to reports from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, at least six people were killed in the attack.
Syrian state news agency SANA attributed the strike to "the Israeli enemy," stating that it caused major destruction to the targeted building. While the Syrian air defense reportedly intercepted some of the missiles, the strike resulted in casualties and widespread damage.
Iranian sources confirmed that members of the Iranian diplomatic mission in Damascus, including the ambassador, were unharmed. However, the consulate building sustained severe damage as a result of the airstrike.
Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad visited the Iranian Embassy following the attack, underscoring the solidarity between the two nations in the face of external aggression.
This latest incident comes amidst heightened tensions in the region, with Israel ramping up airstrikes in Syria following an attack by the Iranian-backed Palestinian faction Hamas on Israeli territory.
