Pakistani consumers will be buying expensive sugar once again as sugar prices started to increase in the local market due to sugar mill owners lobbying to export one million tonnes of sugar.
Sources said Sugar Advisory Board might allow export of surplus sugar.
The price of 50 kg bag of sugar have been increased from Rs300 to Rs7,000 in the wholesale market. In the retail market too, sugar is being sold at Rs150 to Rs162 per kg.
The local rate rose even before the possible permission to export sugar. A bag of sugar in the wholesale market is more expensive than Rs300 in last 10 days. Sources claimed the price of a 50 kg bag has increased from Rs6700 to Rs7000.
As per the document available with the SAMAA TV the price of the sugar have been increased Rs1.5 in last one week alone. On the other hand, sugar became expensive at utility stores too and available at Rs155 per kg.
