In anticipation of a severe heatwave forecast to hit Punjab between May 21 and 27, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued comprehensive guidelines to relevant institutions to mitigate the impact of the extreme weather.
PDMA Director General Irfan Kathia highlighted the increased risk of severe heat from May 21 to 27, DG PDMA, particularly in the plains of Punjab, with districts in southern Punjab expected to be significantly affected. The PDMA has urged various departments to take proactive measures to ensure public safety and well-being during this period.
In response, the Punjab Health Department has been asked by the PDMA to cancel all leave for doctors and paramedical staff to ensure full medical support is available. Hospitals have been instructed to set up dedicated heatwave counters to provide immediate care for heat-related illnesses.
The deputy commissioners have been directed to ensure the availability of heatwave prevention facilities in public spaces. Additionally, a public awareness campaign has been initiated, utilizing helpline numbers and mosque announcements to educate the public on heatwave precautions.
Farmers have been specifically targeted in these efforts, with PDMA emphasizing the need to inform them about the potential effects of the heatwave on crops. Veterinary care centres have been instructed to operate 24 hours a day and ensure the supply of clean water at animal markets.
These steps are part of a broader strategy by PDMA Punjab to reduce the adverse impacts of the heatwave and safeguard the health and livelihoods of the residents in the affected regions.
