Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has initiated a series of special flights to the Iraqi city of Najaf, aimed at facilitating pilgrims during the upcoming Ashura period.
The operation, dubbed "Operation Ashura," commenced on July 5, with two more flights scheduled for July 7 and July 11.
PIA's special flights will not only take pilgrims to Najaf, but also ensure their smooth return. The return operations are set to begin from July 20, with flights scheduled on July 21 and July 25 to bring back the pilgrims from Najaf.
"Operation Ashura" is designed to provide a seamless travel experience for pilgrims during this significant period of religious observance. The initiative underscores PIA's commitment to serving the needs of its passengers and supporting the spiritual journeys of its customers.
Ashura holidays in Pakistan
The exact dates for Ashura holidays hinge on the decision of the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee regarding the sighting of the Muharram moon. If the moon is sighted on the evening of July 6, then Muharram 1 will fall on July 7. Consequently, Ashura will be observed on July 15 and 16, corresponding to Monday and Tuesday. In this scenario, the public holidays will also be on July 15 and 16.
Alternatively, if the new Islamic year commences on July 8, then Ashura will be marked on July 16 and 17. This would result in public holidays on July 16 and 17, which are Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.
