On July 10, 2024, a 15-year-old Dalit boy was severely assaulted in Shravasti district of Uttar Pradesh. Three upper-caste youths reportedly beat the boy and forced him to drink urine. The victim, who works as a technician setting up sound systems for events, was attacked after asking for payment for his work.
The assailants, identified as Krishan Tiwari, Dilip Mishra, and Satyam Tiwari, were arrested after the victim filed an FIR. However, no legal action has been taken against them, and they have not been presented in court.
According to government records, Uttar Pradesh leads in reported crimes against Dalits with 15,368 cases. Other states with high incidences include Rajasthan (8,952), Madhya Pradesh (7,733), Bihar (6,509), Odisha (2,902), Maharashtra (2,743), Andhra Pradesh (2,315), and Karnataka (1,977).
The National Crime Report states that 57,000 violent incidents against Dalits were reported in 2022. In Gujarat alone, 9,178 cases were recorded over the past seven years.
These incidents reflect ongoing concerns about the safety and rights of Dalits and other minority communities in India.
