At least seven people were killed while 10 people were injured when the roof of a church collapsed in northern Mexico's Tamaulipas state, said local authorities.
Jorge Cuellar, the state public security spokesperson, stated "Unfortunately, the death of seven people has been confirmed".
Officials stated that the collapse of the church of Santa Cruz in Madero City may have been caused by a structural failure of the building.
Authorities have now implemented an emergency social assistance plan to support those affected by the collapse.
Approximately 30 parishioners were trapped in the rubble when the roof of a church suddenly collapsed.
The incident occurred while around 100 people were inside the church.
Search and rescue efforts were immediately initiated, with searchers carefully crawling under the fallen roof slabs, and dogs were brought in to assist in locating possible survivors.
Social media footage captured the harrowing moment when the church's roof collapsed, sending clouds of gray smoke into the air and causing the yellow brick outer walls to topple.
Rescue operations continued into the night as authorities worked tirelessly to locate any remaining survivors.
