In India, the safety of women has increasingly become a matter of serious concern. With the rise of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to power, there has been a noticeable increase in incidents of gender-based violence, casting a shadow over the future of women in the country.
One recent incident in West Bengal has particularly shocked the nation. In Nandigram, BJP workers allegedly stripped a woman and forced her to walk 300 meters naked as a form of political revenge. The woman, who recently switched allegiance from the BJP to the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), reported that she and her family were attacked by BJP supporters. The attackers also damaged her home.
Following the incident, six individuals, including BJP booth president Tapas Das, have been taken into custody by the police. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh condemned the act, attributing it to political retaliation by BJP members against TMC supporters.
Gender rights activist, Sthabdi Das, has pointed out the BJP's long-standing history of mistreatment towards women, labeling the party as uncivilized and disrespectful. Despite public outcry and protests demanding justice, incidents of violence against women continue to rise under the current government.
The Modi administration is now facing significant domestic and international pressure, as BJP workers' actions increasingly draw criticism.
