A recent report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) in India has shed light on criminal cases against elected representatives, with a focus on crimes against women.
According to the report, 151 public representatives face serious charges related to crimes against women. Of these, 16 are accused of rape and sexual assault.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), India's ruling party, has the highest number of representatives involved in such cases. The report states that 54 current BJP members of parliament and state assemblies are implicated in cases related to crimes against women.
The ADR report also mentions that several BJP ministers, including Home Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar, face multiple criminal charges. Kumar reportedly has 42 cases against him, with over 30 related to crimes against women.
Other BJP members, including Shantanu Thakur and Sukanta Majumdar, face numerous cases involving serious crimes against women and hate speech, according to the report.
The National Election Watch report indicates that 19 cases related to women have been filed against BJP and allied ministers.
The ADR report further states that out of 72 ministers who took oath for various portfolios, 71 are involved in some form of criminal case.
