On the 17th day of the 1965 war between Pakistan and India, both sides reported a lot of military actions and casualties. Pakistani forces claimed substantial territorial gains and equipment destruction, while an Indian air strike resulted in civilian casualties.
The Pakistani military reported capturing approximately 500 square miles of Indian territory, including areas in Akhnoor, Khem Karan, and Rajasthan sectors. They also claimed to have destroyed 442 Indian tanks and captured 17 in working condition.
In the Sialkot sector, Pakistani forces reported inflicting heavy losses on Indian forces, allegedly destroying 51 tanks and 14 guns. The Pakistani artillery also claimed to have destroyed 4 tanks in the Khem Karan sector.
The Pakistan Air Force conducted strikes on Indian airbases at Samba, Jammu sector, Pathankot, and Adampur.
However, the day also saw civilian casualties when the Indian Air Force reportedly targeted a Pakistani passenger train, resulting in 20 fatalities and 48 injuries.
Pakistani forces reported capturing 20 officers, 19 JCOs, and 530 Indian soldiers as prisoners of war.
Meanwhile, President Ayub Khan stated at the United Nations that "effective means and methods should be devised for a final solution to the Kashmir issue."
