Consumers in Karachi may soon face higher electricity bills as the K-Electric has submitted a request for a fuel price adjustment (FPA) for August.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) will hear the utility company’s plea today, which seeks an increase of 51 paisas per unit in electricity rates.
The proposed increase comes as part of K-Electric's regular FPA mechanism, which adjusts electricity tariffs based on fluctuations in fuel costs. If NEPRA approves the request, consumers in Karachi could face an additional financial burden of over Rs850 million.
However, not all consumers will be affected by the potential price hike. Lifeline customers, who typically consume low amounts of electricity, will be exempt from the proposed increase, ensuring that the most economically vulnerable households in Karachi are protected from the added cost.
