Islamabad witnessed violent protests as demonstrators from a political party clashed with law enforcement agencies on Sunday. The unrest resulted in one police officer's death and injuries to over 70 security personnel.
Authorities report that protesters, allegedly transported from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, engaged in destructive activities, damaging government property and assaulting law enforcement officers at various locations in the capital.
Police Constable Abdul Hamid Shah succumbed to injuries sustained during the riots after being abducted and subjected to violence by the protesters.
Law enforcement agencies have detained 795 individuals, including 106 Afghan nationals residing illegally in the country. Officials also seized 115 vehicles and confiscated a significant quantity of projectiles, including slingshots, marbles, and tear gas masks.
Reports suggest that some of the apprehended individuals were off-duty police officers from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, allegedly participating in the protests while in civilian attire. Twenty-two police officers and two Counter-Terrorism Department personnel were among those arrested.
Authorities claim that protest organizers misused government resources, including ambulances and fire tenders from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, to transport protesters and supplies to Islamabad. Six ambulances, one water tanker, and twelve fire engines have been impounded.
Government officials have pledged to take strict legal action against all individuals involved in the unrest, emphasizing that the misuse of public resources for violent purposes is both illegal and reprehensible.
