Rashid Khan -  Afghanistan’s celebrated cricket star and national team captain -  has made a bold statement in opposition to the Taliban government’s recent ban on women’s medical education.

Taking to his X (formerly Twitter), Rashid Khan expressed his disappointment and concern over the restriction, urging a review of the decision that prevents Afghan women from pursuing careers in the medical field.

The Taliban’s decree, which prohibits women from attending medical institutions, has sparked outrage both within Afghanistan and globally. Rashid Khan, who is widely regarded as one of the finest spin bowlers in the world, used his platform to highlight the critical impact this policy will have on Afghanistan’s future.

He emphasised that education, especially for women, is an essential pillar for the development of any society.

“I am saddened and disappointed by the closure of educational and medical departments for our sisters. It’s deeply painful to see the emotional toll this decision has on them,” Khan wrote.

“Learning knowledge is obligatory for every Muslim, both men and women. This decision undermines the fundamental right of women to receive education, particularly in the medical field, which is vital to the future of our country.”

Khan’s appeal resonates deeply, particularly in the context of Afghanistan's dire need for medical professionals. He highlighted the acute shortage of female doctors and nurses, a situation that severely impacts healthcare access for Afghan women. Without trained female medical practitioners, many women are left without the specialized care they need, exacerbating gender disparities in healthcare.

“Afghanistan is at a critical juncture, and we need professionals in every field, especially in healthcare,” Khan stated. “The lack of female doctors and nurses is a matter of grave concern. Women’s health, dignity, and well-being are at stake. Our sisters and mothers deserve the right to education and to contribute to the development of our society.”

The decision to ban women from medical education has ignited international condemnation, with numerous human rights organizations and governments calling for a reversal of the policy. Khan’s stance has added to the growing chorus of voices demanding change, with many calling for the Taliban to respect women’s rights to education and to work towards a more inclusive society.

In his post, Rashid Khan also reminded his followers of the teachings of Islam, which encourage the pursuit of knowledge for both men and women. “Education is not only a right but a responsibility that lies with every member of society. I hope that the authorities will reconsider this decision and allow our sisters to pursue education and contribute to the nation’s growth, in line with the true principles of our religion,” Khan wrote.
