Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs), leaving the team with another gap to fill ahead of the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy. Cricket Australia confirmed on Thursday that the 35-year-old’s ODI career had come to an end.
Stoinis, who made his ODI debut in 2015, played 71 matches, scoring 1,495 runs at an average of 26.69 and taking 48 wickets at 43.12. He was a key member of Australia’s 2023 World Cup-winning squad and was named ODI Player of the Year in 2019. However, he will continue to be available for T20 Internationals.
“Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for every moment I’ve had in the green and gold. Representing my country at the highest level is something I’ll always cherish,” Stoinis said in a statement.
Australian coach Andrew McDonald praised Stoinis’ contributions, stating:
“Stoin has been such a pivotal part of our ODI setup for the past decade. He should be congratulated on his ODI career and all of his achievements.”
Selection Woes for Australia Ahead of Champions Trophy
Stoinis’ retirement adds to Australia’s growing selection concerns ahead of the Champions Trophy, which is set to take place in the subcontinent later this month.
- All-rounder Mitchell Marsh has already been ruled out of the tournament due to a back injury.
- Cameron Green is still recovering from surgery.
- Captain Pat Cummins and bowler Josh Hazlewood remain injury doubts for the ICC event.
With multiple key players unavailable, Australia faces a challenging squad selection as they prepare for their Champions Trophy campaign.
