The price of chicken meat in Karachi has surged once again, making it difficult for shopkeepers to sell at the official rates. Consumers are feeling the pinch as rates continue to climb, with further hikes expected as Ramazan approaches.
Despite the official rate for live chicken being set at Rs420 per kg, it is being sold at Rs500 per kg in markets. Similarly, the official price of chicken meat is Rs650 per kg, but retailers are selling it for Rs760 per kg.
Poultry vendors argue that the official rates are unrealistic, as they are purchasing live chicken at Rs470 per kg.
"How can we sell it at Rs420 when we are buying it for Rs470?" questioned a frustrated shopkeeper.
Shoppers are struggling to afford chicken, with many opting for cheaper alternatives.
"I came to buy chicken meat, but I can only afford some liver," lamented a woman at a local market.
A month ago, chicken meat was available for Rs500 to Rs550 per kg, showing a steep increase in recent weeks.
With Ramazan approaching, poultry prices are expected to rise even further, possibly reaching Rs800 per kg in the coming weeks.
Consumers are urging government intervention to control hoarding and price manipulation, ensuring affordable poultry during the holy month.
