India secured their third Champions Trophy title, with a commanding performance in the final, defeating New Zealand opponents to cap off an unbeaten run through the tournament at the Dubai stadium on Sunday.
India's Innings
49th Over
The victory, which was highlighted by Ravindra Jadeja’s match-winning shot, confirmed India’s dominance in the competition.
With just two runs required for victory, Jadeja sealed the match by pulling a delivery from O'Rourke past deep square leg and into the boundary.
He raised his arms in celebration, as did his teammate, Rahul, with the rest of the team rushing onto the field in jubilation.
Rahul, who played a key role in the chase, had earlier taken a single off O'Rourke’s delivery, having pulled a short ball to deep square leg.
Jadeja had also pushed a fuller-length ball from O'Rourke to mid-off for another single, while earlier, he had flicked a good-length ball on leg stump off his pads to the keeper.
India’s performance in the tournament had been remarkable, with the team rarely facing significant challenges. The victory marked their second consecutive ICC title, following their triumph in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
48th Over
New Zealand’s Kyle Jamieson played a pivotal role in slowing India’s march towards victory.
The Indian team had only 11 runs to get off 15 balls when Jamieson was brought in, and his timely wickets created a dramatic shift in the match's momentum.
Jamieson began his spell by dismissing Hardik Pandya with a sharp bouncer.
The delivery, which was short and shoulder-high on off-stump, rushed Pandya into a pull shot, sending a top edge skyward. The ball was easily caught by Jamieson himself, giving the bowler his first wicket of the match. Pandya, who had been steady at the crease, departed after scoring 18 runs off 18 balls.
Following the wicket of Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja arrived at the crease, with India needing 11 runs from the remaining 15 balls.
Jamieson, bowling around the wicket, posed a serious challenge to Jadeja. Despite being under pressure, Jadeja managed to find gaps, taking two runs off Jamieson’s first delivery.
Jadeja continued to strike well, pulling a back-of-length ball to deep backward square leg for another couple of runs. As the match progressed, the tension mounted with both teams aware of the game’s tight balance.
India's chase was in full swing, but the combination of Jamieson's control and the pressure at the crease left India fighting for every run.
47th Over
In the 47th over, India’s top order faced a series of tricky deliveries from O'Rourke, with Rahul and Pandya managing to secure valuable runs despite a few close calls.
At 46.6, O'Rourke bowled to Rahul, who mistimed his pull shot, yet managed to scramble for a single.
The ball was banged in short, reaching Rahul at deep backward square leg.
Earlier, O'Rourke had bowled to Pandya at 46.5, where Pandya collected two runs, although a miscommunication between the two batsmen almost resulted in a run-out.
Both Rahul and Pandya found themselves nearly at the same end.
Despite this moment of confusion, no harm was done, and they continued their partnership with no further issues.
At 46.4, O'Rourke delivered a fuller ball outside off to Pandya, who drove it confidently to deep cover for another single.
Then came a remarkable shot at 46.3, when O'Rourke bowled a good-length delivery outside off. Pandya, stepping down the track, managed to muscle the ball over mid-off for a boundary.
The ball reached the fence in one bounce, much to the crowd's delight.
However, the over started with another single at 46.1, where Rahul mistimed his pull shot, collecting a run to deep backward square leg.
Despite the tense moments, both players played their shots wisely and contributed to India’s steady progress in the match.
46th Over
India's Hardik Pandya turned the momentum with a stunning six, but Ravindra's final over saw mixed results, combining well-placed shots with some tight calls.
The over began with Ravindra floating a ball outside off to KL Rahul, who eased it to extra cover for a single. He followed up by delivering a quicker length ball, which Rahul mistimed back towards the bowler, resulting in no run.
Next, Ravindra bowled to Hardik Pandya, who pushed a flatter ball outside off to point for a quick single. He then faced another flatter delivery, which he drilled to extra cover, yet was unable to score. However, the next ball saw Pandya unleash a powerful shot, sending the ball soaring over the bowler's head for a huge six.
Ravindra's final delivery was a toss-up outside off to Pandya, who let it go. The umpire called it a wide, though some believed the call was tight. Latham missed the ball and conceded a bye in the process.
The over concluded with 11 runs, though Pandya's strong shot and quick running kept India moving forward despite the mixed results.
45th Over
In a tense encounter, India’s chase for a challenging target continued to build momentum as KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya played crucial roles in a late push for victory.
With 33 runs required off 33 balls, the duo demonstrated composure in the final overs.
Rahul’s performance with the bat began with a flourish in the 45th over. O'Rourke bowled a full-length delivery outside off stump, which Rahul expertly drove through the cover region for a boundary.
Pandya, on the other hand, looked to take control after facing some tight bowling.
O'Rourke bowled a short-length ball on Pandya’s pads, which he flicked away with authority, but a fielder positioned at deep midwicket prevented any significant gain.
Pandya was unable to get off the mark with the next delivery as he left a short ball outside off stump, which he seemingly hoped would be given as wide but was not.
In a brief moment of urgency, India’s score stood at 33 runs from 33 balls, with both Rahul and Pandya seeking to ensure a steady accumulation of runs.
However, despite a few close moments, they kept the chase on track with an eye firmly on the target ahead.
