Streaming giant Netflix has officially announced a live-action adaptation of Scooby-Doo, marking the first time the beloved animated franchise will be brought to life in a series format.
The eight-episode show is set to explore the origin story of Mystery Inc., delving into how the iconic group of teenage detectives first came together.
According to the official synopsis, the series will follow Shaggy and Daphne during their final summer at camp, where they encounter a lost Great Dane puppy who may have witnessed a supernatural murder. Joined by Velma, a scientifically inclined local, and the mysterious new kid Freddy, the group embarks on a haunting adventure that unravels dark secrets.
Netflix has described the series as a “modern reimagining” of the classic mystery-solving team and their talking dog. However, no casting details have been revealed so far. The series will be written by Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg under the banner of Midnight Radio.
A legacy of mystery and adventure
Scooby-Doo has remained a staple of popular culture since its debut in 1969 with Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! on CBS. Created by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, the show followed a group of four teenagers—Fred, Daphne, Velma, and Shaggy—and their Great Dane, Scooby-Doo, as they traveled in their Mystery Machine van solving eerie cases, which often involved unmasking villains disguised as supernatural entities.
Over the decades, the franchise has spawned multiple animated series, TV specials, direct-to-video films, and two live-action movies (Scooby-Doo in 2002 and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed in 2004), both starring Matthew Lillard as Shaggy and Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne.
While previous live-action adaptations focused on established versions of the characters, Netflix’s iteration aims to provide a fresh perspective by exploring their formative years.
