Former Pakistani Test cricketer Danish Kaneria has stirred controversy after attributing responsibility for the recent Pahalgam attack to Pakistan in a contentious social media post.
Kaneria, who represented Pakistan in international cricket, posted a controversial tweet questioning why Pakistan's Prime Minister had not condemned the attack if the country wasn't involved. "If Pakistan is not involved in this attack, why hasn't the Prime Minister condemned it yet?" Kaneria wrote, while tagging Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in his post.
The former spin bowler further escalated his accusations by questioning: "Why are your forces suddenly on high alert? Because you know the truth." He concluded his tweet by alleging that Pakistan is "harboring terrorists" and added "shame on you."
The remarks have triggered strong reactions from Pakistani social media users and political circles, with many criticizing Kaneria for making what they consider unfounded allegations against Pakistan.
Several social media users expressed concern that such controversial statements could potentially increase tensions between the two neighboring countries, which already maintain fragile relations.
The controversy comes amid heightened diplomatic tension following the Pahalgam incident, where unknown gunmen reportedly killed more than 25 tourists and injured several others at the popular tourist destination in occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
In response to the situation, Pakistan's National Security Committee, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, recently announced the suspension of all trade with India, closure of the Wagah border, and restriction of airspace. The committee also rejected India's decision to suspend the Sindh Taas Agreement and stated that any water blockade would be considered "an act of war," warning that any aggression would be met with a strong response.
The committee further announced that other agreements with India, including the Shimla Agreement, would remain suspended.
Pakistan had previously expressed condolences over the Pahalgam incident, which Indian authorities have characterized as a militant attack.
