In a pioneering move to rejuvenate its tourism industry, Sri Lanka has unveiled a groundbreaking project aimed at attracting more tourists.
The Sri Lankan cabinet of ministers has given the green light to a pilot program offering free tourist visas to visitors from seven select countries, sparking hope of a tourism revival in the island nation.
Competing for tourism
The COVID-19 pandemic has dealt a severe blow to tourism around the globe, with many destinations facing significant drops in tourist numbers.
Recognising this shared challenge, Sri Lanka is taking steps to entice travelers and compete in the increasingly fierce tourism market. The country, which has grappled with the aftermath of the Easter Sunday attack, the COVID-19 pandemic, and a subsequent economic crisis, is now pushing forward with a plan to breathe new life into its tourism industry.
Eligible countries for free tourist visas
Tourists hailing from seven select nations will have the opportunity to explore Sri Lanka without the financial burden of a tourist visa until March 31, 2024. The list of eligible countries includes:
- China
- India
- Russia
- Thailand
- Indonesia
- Malaysia
Tourists from these countries will have the unique privilege of experiencing the rich cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and warm hospitality of Sri Lanka without the usual visa fees.
It's important to note that Pakistan is notably absent from the list of countries eligible for free tourist visas. Travelers from Pakistan will be required to apply for a tourist visa and pay the applicable fee prior to embarking on their journey to Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka's government is committed to providing foreign tourists with an enriching and hassle-free experience. To facilitate easier access to the island's world heritage sites and historical landmarks, the government has introduced several innovations. These include:
-
Single payment package tickets:
A unified ticketing system that allows visitors to purchase a single package ticket granting access to all relevant historical sites. These tickets can be conveniently acquired at the airport or online. -
Enhanced rail access
In a bid to improve transportation for tourists, Sri Lanka is introducing online ticketing for Sri Lanka Railways tourist coaches, streamlining the travel experience.
Sri Lanka's ambitious goal is to welcome five million tourists annually over the next three years. By offering free tourist visas to select countries and enhancing the overall tourist experience, the nation aspires to rebound from the challenges it has faced and flourish as a thriving and coveted tourist destination in the post-pandemic world.
