The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) further solidified its control over the Punjab Assembly with the successful election of Malik Zaheer Iqbal Chand as Deputy Speaker after Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan sworn in as Speaker.
Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan’s victory, securing 224 votes against his opponent’s 96, marked a significant moment for the party. He subsequently took the oath of office, officially assuming the role of Speaker.
A total of 323 members cast their votes for the Deputy Speaker, with none being rejected. Ultimately, Malik Zaheer Iqbal Chand secured an overwhelming majority of 220 votes, solidifying his position as the Deputy Speaker of the Punjab Assembly. Conversely, Moin Riaz, the candidate of the Sunni Ittehad Council, received 103 votes.
This outcome further strengthens PML-N's position within the assembly, paving the way for the party to nominate its candidate for the upcoming Chief Minister election.
The success of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker was met with jubilation from League members, who raised slogans of 'Sher Aya, Sher Aya' in the House. Additionally, Maryam Nawaz extended her congratulations to Malik Ahmed Khan with a gesture of approval.
With the Speaker and Deputy Speaker positions filled, the session of the Punjab Assembly was adjourned until February 26th at 11 am, during which the Chief Minister of Punjab will be elected.
According to the announcement issued by the Secretary Punjab Assembly, the election of the Chief Minister is scheduled for Monday, February 26th, with nomination papers accepted until 5 pm on Sunday.
