Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei issued on Tuesday stern warning to Israel following the destruction of Iran's consulate building in Damascus, Syria, and the tragic loss of seven Iranian military advisors in Israeli airstrikes.
The airstrikes, which targeted the Iranian consulate situated next to the embassy building in Damascus’s Mezzeh district, claimed the lives of high-ranking military officials, including Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi and his deputy General Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi, both esteemed commanders of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC)’s Quds Force.
Ayatollah Khamenei condemned the "usurping and despicable" Zionist regime for the heinous act, vowing that Iran's brave men would not let such crimes go unpunished. "The evil regime will be punished by our brave men. We will make them regret this crime and other ones, by God's will," declared the Supreme Leader in a message issued shortly after the airstrikes.
The loss of these esteemed military figures has plunged Iran into grief, with Ayatollah Khamenei extending his condolences to the families of the victims and wishing divine mercy upon them.
The Israeli airstrikes, deemed a violation of international obligations and conventions, have prompted Iranian officials to vow a firm response. "We will make them regretful about the crime and similar acts," Ayatollah Khamenei asserted, underlining Iran's determination to seek justice for the fallen heroes.
The escalation marks a dangerous turn in the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel, with the latter repeatedly targeting Iranian military officials in Syria and Lebanon, where Iran supports militant groups hostile to Israel.
Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group backed by Iran, has also pledged retaliation for the airstrikes, as one of its members was among those killed in the attack. The group emphasized that the perpetrators of this "crime" would face punishment and revenge.
As tensions continue to simmer in the region, the international community remains on edge, wary of the potential repercussions of further escalation between Iran and Israel. The specter of a broader conflict looms large, raising concerns about the stability of the volatile Middle East region.
