Faisalabad - Manchester of Pakistan - has witnessed a distressing surge in suicide attempts this year, with 250 individuals attempting to take their lives and 25 succumbing to their struggles, including several women.
Recent reports highlighted the tragic case of Zafar Abbas, a police officer who ended his life two days ago after battling severe mental stress.
Abbas, who had been on medical leave for the past month, reportedly used a noose to end his suffering.
His death has brought to light the immense psychological burden carried by law enforcement personnel. "Our job is inherently stressful," stated RPO Dr Abid, emphasising the need for better mental health support within the force.
Medical experts are sounding the alarm, citing depression as a predominant factor in these suicides. Dr. Salma, a renowned psychiatrist, stressed the importance of recognising the signs of mental distress.
"When an individual's eating, drinking, sleeping, and daily routines are disrupted, it is imperative to seek psychiatric help," she advised.
The statistics paint a grim picture. In just four and a half months, 250 men and women have attempted suicide, marking a 15 percent increase from last year.
