The National Assembly on Friday passed a resolution opposing a recent resolution by the US House of Representatives.
The resolution, presented by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader and Member National Assmebly Shaista Parvez Malik, faced strong opposition from members of the Sunni Ittehad Council, who vocally expressed their disapproval during the session.
The resolution was approved by a majority vote, despite the Sunni Ittehad Council members raising slogans and standing in protest. They shouted “Cipher Cipher” and “Shame Shame” to voice their dissent, creating a tense atmosphere in the assembly.
The passed resolution stated that millions of Pakistanis participated in democratic elections, and any foreign interference in Pakistan’s internal affairs is unacceptable.
It called on the United States and the international community to address human rights violations in Gaza and Kashmir, and urged the Pakistani government to strengthen bilateral relations with the US based on mutual respect.
The Lower House of the Parliament expressed regret over the US resolution, asserting that it was not entirely based on facts.
The resolution declared Pakistan’s stance as a sovereign and independent nation, unwilling to tolerate any external meddling in its internal matters. It highlighted the need for the US Congress to focus on human rights issues in Gaza and Occupied Kashmir.
Ms Malik, in her address, condemned the non-binding resolution of the US House of Representatives as an intrusion into Pakistan’s sovereignty. She criticized the opposition members for supporting what she described as an attack on Pakistan's independence, and called for unity in rejecting any foreign interference.
