The ongoing heatwave in Karachi is expected to break tonight as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecasted light rain in the city.
After days of soaring temperatures, with the mercury climbing above 40°C and "feels like" temperatures exceeding 50°C, relief is finally in sight for Karachiites.
The PMD's latest advisory indicates that the intense heat will diminish as a low-pressure system, which had suspended the sea winds, moves away from the port city. "The persisting very hot and humid weather conditions are likely to ease from this evening as the low-pressure area has moved away from Karachi," the Met Office stated.
Residents have been enduring sweltering heat compounded by prolonged electricity load shedding, making daily life increasingly challenging. However, the anticipated restoration of sea breezes and a chance of light showers or drizzle tonight is expected to bring much-needed relief.
The PMD predicts that temperatures will drop, with the mercury hovering between 35-37 degrees Celsius. Today’s highest temperature was recorded at 38°C. While the overall weather will remain hot and humid over the next two days, the light rain will provide a temporary respite.
In addition to Karachi, other parts of Sindh, including Jamshoro, Badin, Thatta, Umerkot, and Tharparkar districts, are likely to experience isolated thunderstorms and rain this evening.
Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz had earlier ruled out any chances of rain in Karachi, but recent developments have brought a glimmer of hope. On Thursday, some areas of the city experienced brief showers, offering a short-lived but refreshing break from the oppressive heat. Humidity, however, quickly returned, diminishing the cooling effect.
