Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said on Friday that the federation was in danger due to the canals project.
Addressing a public gathering in Hyderabad, the former foreign minister mentioned his party’s victory in Umerkot’s by-election, asserting, “The masses have denounced the canal projects by ensuring the PPP’s victory.”
“We brought a no-confidence motion in the country’s history and sent the person packing who constructed two canals. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder Imran Khan had given approval for the construction of two out of the six canals,” Bhutto-Zardari said.
He said, “The PPP and its workers had risen to the occasion when the PTI founder had given approval for the construction of the canals. At the time also, we had staged a protest against them.”
Bhutto-Zardari claimed: “As far as the Umerkot by-elections are concerned, the PTI and PML-N were on the same page regarding this matter. Efforts were made to ensure the PPP’s defeat in the Umerkot by-elections.”
“The people of Umerkot have ensured their [PTI’s] historical defeat. They can’t even hide their faces after the defeat in the Umerkot by-elections,” he said.
Bhutto-Zardari said, “The people of Sindh are standing with those who raised the slogan of Pakistan Khappay. It is the PPP that has always made all-out efforts to ensure the masses get their rights.”
“Hyderabad has proved that it stands with the PPP and former prime minister Benazir Bhutto,” he said.
He had threatened to quit the government if the canals project was not ended.
"It is because of us that those people are sitting in Islamabad," Bhutto-Zardari assailed the centre.
"We have ensured that Shehbaz Sharif becomes the country's premier twice," he said.
He maintained, "We don't want to rule, but need respect and the masses' rights."
